Ekiti varsity students protest alleged unlawful arrest of colleagues!!! Olowo_Sunny

Students of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, on Wednesday took to the street to protest against alleged harassment and unlawful arrest of their colleagues by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The irate students barricaded the institution’s entrance gate with academic activities paralysed as most of the lecturers and other staff could not access the campus.
They appealed to EFCC Acting Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Magu, to order his men to stop harassing innocent students under the guise of being suspected to be involved in cybercrime, popularly called ‘yahoo’.
The protest which began at about 8:15am and lasted till 2:30pm affected free flow of traffic on the Ado-Ifaki dual carriage way, where the aggrieved students gathered to express their displeasure.
Those travelling outside the state capital and those coming in through the route, were enmeshed in the web of gridlock and had to take a detour and took alternative routes to their respective destinations.
Addressing the students, the Director of Welfare, the institution Students’ Union Government, Com. Temitope Aladejare described the alleged arrest as illegal and unconstitutional.
He revealed that four of his colleagues were arrested by some policemen on Wednesday.
“They just came to the hostel in front of the EKSU’s main gate and arrested four of our members. Two of the victims were even naked and they were in their rooms when they pounced on them.
“When they came, they introduced themselves as operatives of the EFCC and forcefully bundled the victims into a van and took them to an unknown destination.
“We are calling on authorities of governments to call them to order,” he said.
When contacted to comment on the protest, the EKSU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bode Olofinmuagun, said he was not on campus and that didn’t have firsthand information about the arrest and the protest staged by the students.
But the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, said he could confirm that arrest were made, which triggered the students to embark on protest.
Ikechukwu added that the police swiftly swung into action to restore orderliness, by ensuring the removal of all blockages on highway for smooth human and vehicular movements.
“I can confirm to you that there was arrest. But the police will continue to be an effective security organisation that will continually work for the peace of our society.
“The students protested and they blocked the major highway and prevented commuters from moving in and out of the state capital, this we will never condone, because that road is not within the confine of the university.
“They obstructed vehicular movements for hours, but we have been able to remove those blockages and restored peace and order around the school premises,” he said.
It would be recalled that few weeks ago, over 40 youths, some of whom were students of higher institutions were arrested in Ado Ekiti by EFCC and whisked away to Ibadan, Oyo State for alleged cyber fraud.

Students plan to protest over ASUU strike on Friday, January 25, 2019

Students of public tertiary institutions have been at home since November 4, 2018.

A group of students of tertiary institutions in Lagos under the aegis of Concerned Nigerian Students are planning to protest on Friday, January 25 2019 to express their displeasure over ASUU strike.

The students in a statement sent to Pulse on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, asked the Federal Government to fulfil the agreement it willfully entered with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in order for them to get back to school.
Recall that the Federal Government and the ASUU leaders have had eight meetings to resolve the ongoing strike which has entered week twelve.
The statement reads in part: ‘’The March tagged #BlackFridayWalk which was earlier scheduled to start by 10am after a Press Conference at the University of Lagos was suspended till further notice for security reasons.

The leadership of the Coalition submitted a letter to the Police informing them of the peaceful protest and the only accepted reason given by the Police to suspend the March is the security situation in Lagos, citing the violence that claimed lives at the APC rally on Tuesday and the reprisal attacks they envisage.
We were very clear that it is never in the interest of the Nigerian State and its instrumentality; in this case, the Police to harbor dissidence, freedom of association and expression. Nevertheless, it is in the understanding of the tension in the political space the thieving ruling class have created, the leadership suspended the protest to prevent any breach of public peace by their agents who are only interested in leaving sorrow, tears and blood.
We called on all Nigerian students to be on the alert for a new date and schedule which is as follows: Date: Friday, 25th of January 2019. Venue: MRS Filling Station Beside UNILAG’’.
On Tuesday, January 22, 2019, Pulse reported the Federal Government and the leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had another meeting on Monday, January 21, 2019.
But the eighth meeting which held at the Federal Ministry of Labour headquarters ended any concrete solution to the ongoing strike.
ASUU declared an indefinite nationwide strike on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at its NEC meeting held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure and since then, both the union and the Federal Government have been going back and forth to resolve the crisis.

ASUU strike: Students protest against FG

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Abia State Chapter on Monday marched through the streets of Umuahia protesting against the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) nationwide strike.
The protesters, who carried placards with different inscriptions, appealed to the Federal Government to negotiate with the striking teachers in order to urgently end the action.
Some of the placards read: “Government don’t commercialise education”, “Save education, save the future”, “Seven per cent budgetary allocation is a misplaced priority,” among others.
The NANS Representative in the South East Zone, Cokey Nwachukwu, said that the students were tired of idling away at home and were anxious to return to school.
“Some of us are supposed to be doing four or five-year courses but as it is now, the years are likely to be extended because of the strike.
“Most of us that are supposed to be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps are now sitting at home.
“Very soon, they will tell us they are going for general elections and will alter our academic calendar,” he said.
The students also urged the Federal Government to urgently address the security challenges in the country, especially in the North-East.
